Career:

My background is in the Regional Archives in Lund where I started to work in mid 1970´s while I was studying. 1984 I took a degree in history and sociology. I became involved in building a demographical database and linking families in a joint project between the Department of Economic History at the University of Lund and the Regional Archives of Lund.

The next project was to build an archival database for describing archives kept in archival institutions, libraries and museums. In doing that we came in contact with the format MARC-AMC and we visited USA to study how the format was used there. The project also resulted in building a system for production of archival guides.

In the late 1980´s I became involved in a project using artificial intelligence to guide users to archival information. It was a co-operation between the Swedish National Archives and the University of Linköping.

1990 I was employed by the National Archives in Stockholm and became project manager of the NAD project with the task to produce a National Archival Database (NAD). Within the NAD project the boundaries of different kinds of administrative units in Sweden, and their changes over time were produced (mainly by back-projection). The resulting boundary data have been used with MapInfo to map demographic data held by the Demographic Data Base at Umeå.

The NAD project also resulted in the production of the first Archival Information System (ARKIS) within the organisation now in use in al the regional archives (seven) and the National Archives. With the help of an unemployment project we also managed to fill the database and today there is about five million records in the system.

Current research:

At the moment I’m the project manager of another project called ARKIS II with the task to produce a web based Archival Information System. The project started 1998 and is scheduled to end next year. The actual programming has taken a year and will end now in May. The next step will be to move five million records from the old to the new system and educate the staff in our organisation.

More about the system can be read on the web page "Standards and the development of Archival Systems at the National Archives of Sweden": www.ra.se/nad/pro/naddemo3.htm
