Career:

My career in the field of computer cartography started during the work on my PhD thesis (1987 to 1993). I digitized a map of the 19th century for mapping of the social and economic structures of the early modern town of Göttingen. 1993 to 1996 I worked in a research project on literacy in early modern germany. In this project we digitized parts of northwestern Germany on the level of municipal boundaries. The digital thematic maps produced in this project will be published in an atlas on literacy in early modern Germany. 1997 to March 2000 I worked as a "project coordinator" at the "Forschungsinstitut für die Geschichte Preußens" (Research Institute for the History of Prussia) in Berlin. At this institute, we developed the concept of a Digital Atlas of Prussia. Because there are some problems in the further funding of the institute, there are some problems in this project, too. Since April 2000 I am collaborator at the Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen in the field of "Historische Fachinformatik".

Current Research

My methodological research is concerning the use of formal methods in the historical sciences and the application of GIS. Applied research affects literacy in early modern Germany and the Thirty Years War.
