NOTES from a CHART OF THE SOLENT by GREENVILE COLLINS,
1693

These notes are made from a copy of the chart of the south
coast of England around Hampshire from Great Britain's Coasting
Pilot by Greenvile Collins, 1693. The chart seen was in a late
edition of the pilot book published by W and J Mount and T Page,
London, 1753. The copy of the pilot is in the collection of the
Hydrographic Office, Taunton; both original and a facsimile
edition were available for study.

The chart shows Portsmouth, Southampton Water, The Solent and
the sea around the Isle of Wight; from about 5 miles west of
Hurst to Chichester Harbour. The size of the chart is
wxh=572x453mm on a sheet folded in the book.

There are several compass roses on the chart, each with rhumb
lines running over sea and land. The rose has star points for
cardinal, half cardinal and false points. The rhumb lines are
bold continuous lines for cardinal and half cardinal directions,
continuous lines for false points, dotted lines for by
points.

The chart has a scale line of 6 miles = 107.6mm. Assuming a
sea mile 6082.93ft the scale of the chart is 1 to 103387, ie
scale about:-
1 to 100000
1.4 sea miles to 1 inch
1.6 miles to 1 inch

The sea area is full of detail information; depths, nature of
the bottom, leading lines, sea marks, buoys, anchorages, etc.
Note that leading lines are double lines to distinguish them
from rhumb lines.
Anchorages use an anchor symbol.
A sea mark on the Bramble is a post with a cross bar. (Jack in
the basket is not shown.)
On land are drawn towns and other settlements. And some
prominent landmarks, like the chalk pits on Portsdown.

And there are artillery style polygonal fortifications around
Gosport, Portsmouth and the King's Docks at Portsea.
