TRANSCRIPT of HAMPSHIRE from COX'S SURVEY of ENGLAND, 1738

FA1998.23
In the Map Collection of Hampshire CC Museums Service is a section torn from an 18th century atlas of England, item HMCMS:FA1998.23. These pages are believed to be from:-
Magna Britannia et Hibernia, Antiqua et Nova, A Survey of England, wherein to Camden's Topographical Account is added a more large History of Cities, Towns, Boroughs, Parishes and Places, (By Thomas Cox).
published about 1738?, which has Robert Morden's smaller county maps, drawn 1690s, first published 1701, as amended by Herman Moll, 1704. This chapter for Hampshire, including the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, is pages 845-920. The page size is about 173x224mm; text laid out in two columns.
In the transcription, pagination and column layout are ignored, paragraphs are retained, even joined up; spelling and punctuation are followed as accurately as my typing allows. Uncial letters are transliterated informally: Greek is left blank ([ ]). There are gaps, transcribed [ ] where the author has left space to be filled in later, mostly market and fair days; and never done so.
