NOTES from DABORN'S MAP of HAMPSHIRE, 1959

These notes are taken from a bronze and enamel map of Hampshire believed to have been designed by C S Daborn, 1959. The shield shape map is mounted on wood as a plaque and was:-
PRESENTED TO / THE SHIP'S COMPANY of H.M.S. HAMPSHIRE / by the PEOPLE of HAMPSHIRE / AS A TOKEN OF THEIR PRIDE IN THE SHIP / AND THEIR REGARD FOR THOSE WHO SAIL IN HER.
engraved on a silver rectangle below the map. The map was hung in the wardroom of HMS Hampshire, a guided missile destroyer of the late 1950s to 1970s. Later the map was held in the Naval Trophy Centre, Portsmouth (and probably was retunred there in 2002).
The map has no indication of its makers but is believed to be the same design as a wall painted map in the Wellington Room, QE II Building, The Castle, Winchester, the offices of Hampshire County Council. The wall map is dated and signed:-
C. S. Daborn, ARCA. 1959.
map type: HantsMap & Daborn 1959
The bronze map size is wxh, map = 69.5x67.5cm. It is heavy.

ie County of Southampton.

scale
There is no indication of scale. Judging from the overall size it is about:-
2 miles to 1 inch

compass rose
up is N

Mounted on the right, on top of the map, is an enamel compass rose; star points for the cardinal, half cardinal, and false points. The map is made with North at the top

relief
The map is made with layer colouring, different enamels, to show relief. The vertical interval is not given, but, at a guess, is about 50m. There are four layers: green, plae green, cream, yellow. The map provides a very clear impression of the 'bones' of the county; Hampshire Downs, South Downs, Wealden Edge, North Hampshire Downs, etc, with the various river basins.

rivers
The major river systems are marked, their wiggly lines emphasised by the surrounding relief.

county
Coloured enamel is used for the county area. The names of the adjacent counties are cast in the bronze background, and each has an applied badge of the county coat of arms; Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

settlements
coat of arms
badges

A limited number of settlements are shown, by a name label. Some towns, not all the 'market towns', also have their coat of arms on an enamel badge mounted on the map:-
