NOTES from DURY'S MAP of the SOUTH COAST, 1764
|

|
These notes are made from a map of the south coast of England,
including Hampshire, published in a Collection of Plans of the
Principal Cities of Great Britain and Ireland, with maps of the
Coast of the said Kingdoms, published by Andrew Dury, Dukes
Court, London, 1764. The item studied is in the British Library,
call number Maps C.24.a.26.

The atlas size, in a later binding? is: wxh = 13x16cm. The map
size is: wxh, sheet = 15.5x12cm; wxh, map = 127x104mm. The maps
are printed with their tops towards the spine of the book.

Hampshire is included in the map on page 3.

Title Page
|
|
The title page has a drape cartouche surmounted by Britannia,
and surrounded by anchor, buoy, sails, flags, drums, gun, lion,
cherub with cornucopia, globe, packages, book, palete, etc. It
reads:-

and IRELAND: with MAPS of the COAST of the said KINGDOMS; Drawn
from the most Accurate Surveys; in particular, those taken by the
late Mr. J. ROCQUE, Topographer to His Majesty.

London, Printed & Sold by A. Dury, in Dukes Court, St. Martin's
Lane. Where may be had his small Universal Pocket Atlas, to which
this is designed as a Second Volume.

|
No date is given but internal evidence suggests it was
published about 1764; 1766 and 1765 have been suggested by
others.

NB. That the degree of Latitude of 60 Geographick ms. contains 69
1/2 British Statute ms. is so well known as to render Scales to
the Maps of Great Britain and Ireland unessesary.

Printed lower right is a compass rose; circles, star points
for cardinal directions, lines for half cardinal, North marked by
a fleur de lys; East marked by a cross. The map is printed with
North at the top of the sheet (towards the spine of the
book).

The scale of the map is meant to be judged from the latitude
and longitude scales. 30 minutes Lat = 44.3 mm gives a scale 1 to
1262409. The map scale is about:-

|
Printed in the map borders are scales of latitude and
longitude for a rectangular projection; chequered and labelled in
15 minute intervals. The lower longitude scale is labelled:-

The sea area is plain. Some areas are labelled, eg:-

The coast is emphasised by form lines.

rivers
|
A few rivers are drawn by wiggly lines, but not labelled. In
Hampshire it is possible to recognise the River Avon, Limington
River, Beaulieu River, River Test, River Itchen, River Hamble,
and River Meon.

county
|
County boundaries are dotted lines tinted on the county side,
a paler tint being used to colour the whole county area. Four
colours are used - Hampshire is yellow; Sussex green; Surrey red;
Wiltshire green; Dorset red; Isle of Wight yellow; the coast is
tinted blue. County areas are labelled, eg:-

The detached part of Hampshire in Sussex is shown.

settlements

Settlements are noticed along the coast, and perhaps a few a
little inland. Places are positioned by a circle, and towns have
some towers etc.

Havant
The engraver, or perhaps the map maker a step earlier, ahs
made a nice spelling error in copying:-
