	NOTES from GRIERSON'S CHART of the COAST of ENGLAND, SCOTLAND and IRELAND, 1749.
Maps 177.d.1	These notes, relevant to Hampshire, are taken from the New and Correct Chart of the Sea Coast of England, Scotland and Ireland, by George Grierson, Dublin, 1749. The map studied is on the Map Room, British Library, call number Maps 177.d.1

	The map size is: wxh, sheet = 55.5x46.5cm; wxh, map = 532x457mm. It is copied from Samuel Thornton's chart, 1708, for an edition of the English Pilot to be printed in Dublin.
	NB remember that these notes are strongly biased to a Hampshire interest.

orientation compass rose rhumb lines up is W magnetic variation	The map has a compass rose aligned on the graticule; star points for cardinal, half cardinal and false points, North marked by a fleur de lys. The map is printed with West at the top of the sheet. Rhumb lines are drawn from the compass rose, and from 15 other centres arranged in a circle around the chart, like a portolan chart. They extend over sea and land, keeping clear of labels. On several rhumb lines there is a printed comment about magnetic variation, for example, in the centre of the chart:- Variation 11: West other rhumb lines have 10 1/2, 10 and 11.
scale line scale	Printed lower right is a scale of:- English and French Leagues 20 in one Degree graduated in 1 league then 10 league intervals, labelled at 10 league intervals. The 80 Leagues = 185.9 mm giving a scale 1 to 2392491 assuming a league is 3 nautical miles of 6080 feet. The map scale is about:- 1 to 2400000 40 (statute) miles to 1 inch 11 leagues to 1 inch There are also:- Duytsche myles 15 in een graadt with 60 myles = 185.8 mm and:- Leagues de Spania 17 1/2 un grada with 70 leagues = 186.8 mm
latitude scale lat and long grid	The map has a scale of latitude and a graticule showing a rectangular projection. The scale is chequered at 5 minute intervals, labelled at degrees. The graticule is, presumably, at 1 degree intervals. 1d latitude = 46.2 mm 1d longitude = 72.3 mm ratio latitude/longitude = 1.56 which suits Hampshire for which the ratio should be 1.58 for a 'square' map.
sea area sea plain depth soundings sandbanks rocks	The sea is plain, and has a scatter of depth soundings, presumably in fathoms. Some sea areas are labelled, eg:- CHANNEL Tor Bay Sandbanks are shown by dotted areas. In the Hampshire area there are:- Shingels Middle / Owers The Middle sandbank in The Solent can be recognised, and the shallows off Portsea Island. Foreshore shallows are indicated by a dotted line in The Solent and Southampton Water. The harbours of Portsmouth, Langstone and Chichester are recognisable, but not labelled. Crosses (+) are used to mark rocks. To the west of the Isle of Wight are three dots labelled:- Needles
coast line coast shaded headlands harbours coast view	The coast line is shaded for emphasis on the landward side, and tinted blue to seaward. The land side is tinted for each country. A few headlands are noticed, eg:- Start Pt Peveral P At the top of the sheet is a series of views of coasts. For example:- Thus the Lizard Point bearing Et. 5 Leagues
country coat of arms	The countries are distinguished by tinting along the coast line; England and Wales green, Scotland pink, etc. The colours might have faded. There is no boundary between England and Scotland. And each country has a coat of arms. England has its arms; gules three lions passant gardant or.
settlements	Settlements are only noticed along the coasts.
