Checklist of Hampshire Maps
Gent Mag 1765
	Road strip maps with segments in Hampshire, probably by Emanuel Bowen, engraved by Thomas Bowen, London, published in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1765-75.
	Published in 'The Gentleman's Magazine AND Historical Chronicle, VOLUME XXXV. For the YEAR M.DCC.LXV. ... By SYLVANUS URBAN, Gent. LONDON: Printed for D. HENRY and R. CAVE, at ST JOHN'S GATE.' 1765
	The 'new Sett of Maps' starts at January 1765 and continued irregularly for the next 10 years; maps are tipped in and are generally page height but longer, folded into the magazine; the magazine page size is 12x31cm; the maps generally have no indication of map maker or engraver but a number of sheets in 1774-75 state Thomas Bowen, who was the son of Emanuel, as the engraver.
	The title page of a monthly issue introduces the map in the following style - 'The Gentleman's Magazine For July 1765. CONTAINING more in Quantity and greater variety then any other Book of the Kind and Price ... ... With a new and accurate Map of the Roads from London to Portsmouth, to Chichester, to Southampton, and to Pool, and of the Road from Southampton to Winchester; in which the exact Distance from Town is set down; the post and cross Roads pointed out; the Cities and market Towns distinguished; and the principal Seats, Parks, and Villages adjoining to the Road properly expressed. ...'
	The magazine was searched for strip maps relevant to Hampshire; the following issues had maps - July 1765, Supplement 1765, July 1775

	Supplement 1765, bound into the volume after the twelve monthly issues; '... the Road from London to the Land's-End in Cornwall ... the Road from Exeter to Truro. N.B. This is a part of a new sett of Maps of the Roads, which will be continued till compleated.'; London via Staines, Middlesex; then Bagshot, Surrey; via Basingstoke, Whitchurch, Andover, then Middle wallop, hampshire; through Salisbury, Wiltshire; then Shaftesbury, Dorset; Yeovil, Somerset; Axminster, Honiton, and Exeter, Ashburton, Plymouth, Devon; then Looe, Penzance, to Lands End, Cornwall; from Exeter, via Tavistock, devon; then Liskard to Truro, Cornwall.
	July 1775; London to Barnstable etc; from Andover, Hampshire; via Amesbury, Shrewton, Warminster, Wiltshire; then Bruton, Bridgewtaer, Somerset; via South Moulton to Barnstable, Devon; from Barnstable, Devon; via Launceston, Padstow, to Truro, Cornwall.
