NOTES from PLAYERS' CIGARETTE CARD MAP of HAMPSHIRE

These notes are taken from a map of Hampshire on a cigarette
card issued by John Player and Sons, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire,
about 1910. The cigarette card studied is on the Map Collection
of Hampshire CC Museums Service, item HMCMS:FA2004.5.

The map size is: wxh, sheet ie cigarette card = 36x68mm; wxh,
map = 32x34mm. the map is colour printed.

A plain cartouche upper right reads:-
HAMPSHIRE
Printed upper left is the coat of arms of the county.

The map has no indicator of orientation; it is printed with
North at the top of the sheet.

scale
|
The map has no scale line. Using distances between towns,
calculations done by DISTTAB.exe software, the map scale is about
1 to 3307950 +- 15%. The map scale is about:-

sea area

|
The sea area is printed blue. Two sea areas are labelled:-

coast tinted
|
The coast line is a bold dark blue line, emphasised by blue
tinting in the offing.
The shape of the coast line, even allowing for the small size
of the map, is not very good.

rivers
|
Some rivers are drawn by wiggly line, tapering inland.
Only:-
AVON
is labelled. The Stour, Avon, Test, Itchin, Meon, and Rother
can be recognised.

county
|
The county boundary is a bold red line, emphasised on the
Hampshire side by an orange tint. The county area is tinted
yellow. Adjacent counties are separated by red or blue lines with
tints and fill colours; Dorset blue, Wiltshire lilac, Berkshire
green, Surrey pink, Sussex, dark pink; more colours than
necessary. The adjacent counties are labelled, eg;-

Settlements are positioned by a dot; labelled in upright block
caps. The label is larger for Southampton.

Descriptive Text

The lower part of the faces of the cigarette cards in the
series show industries - the series has no title but is known as
'counties and industries'. The Hampshire card has a picture of a
shepherd and sheep on downland in a sunset, captioned:-

The reverse of the card has descriptive text about the
county:-
|
|
HAMPSHIRE
|
|
Is mainly given up to agriculture and sheep farming. Its 'South
Downs' being world-famed. There are several industries of a minor
nature, chief of which is brewing. Winchester, the county town,
is purely residential, and has a fine old cathedral. Portsmouth
is noted for its Naval dockyard and is most strongly fortified.
The north-eastern part of the county, about Aldershot, is
principally occupied by military camps. Pop. 768,608.

The original series is unnumbered, but a later edition, about
1914, has Hampshire as no.25 in a set of 25.
