These notes are made from a copies of Bowen's and Owen's road maps which show routes in Hampshire, published from 1720 onwards. The maps are derived from Ogilby's maps of 1675. Part of Bowen's motivation in reproducing the road book was to make it more practical for the traveller to use, make it a size that would fit the pocket.

The maps used are in the collection of Hampshire County Council Museums Service. This study concentrates upon what can be seen from the maps; studies of the background of mapping in England, and map makers have been published elsewhere.

A facsimile of the road book has been published:-
