Old Hampshire Mapped

Structure of Hantsmap WWW Pages

structure The overall structure of the HANTSMAP html pages is complicated. There is nothing in the structure that is particularly complex, all parts are fairly simple, but there is a lot of it!

Most of the structure follows a strong pattern which was developed to provide access to the map of a single maker. This unit structure is described here in a hypermap. Clicking on the thumbnail images in the hypermap will take you to more detailed notes about that page or frameset of pages.
Hypermap for a map maker
common
links

Nearly every page has:-
  • a button at the top left that goes logically back, ie one step out and up the hypermap tree
  • a button to the main menu, ie an escape button
  • a button to the maker's menu page
These are placed at the top or in a footer of the page, and are not described in the separate page notes.
back
The hypermap does not indicate backward routes. These mostly run back up the route you followed to a page.
frames HantsMap uses framesets, which all have the same shape. The screen is divided into a narrow left column, which has a small top frame and a longer menu frame, and a larger right frame. These are referred to [fairly] consistently by frame names:- tfr, mfr, and rfr.
no frames HantsMap uses frames as an essential navigation tool.

There is an unforgiving no frames comment:-

<no frames><body bgcolor="#FFFFDD">

abbrev
In the notes the following abbreviations are used to stand for various elements of filenames, etc:-
[MAKER] = maker identifier, eg:- SAXTON1
[MKR] = maker's code, eg:- SAX1
[MK] = maker's short code, eg:- SX1
[Maker] = maker's surname, eg:- Saxton
[Maker name] = maker's name, eg:- Christopher Saxton
[map date] = date of map, eg:- 1575

[NGR] = 4 figure ngr, eg:- SU42
[NGR+] = accurate ngr, eg:- SU413281

[FTR] = feature code, see list, eg:- RIV for rivers
[FEATURE].htm = feature notes filename, eg:- CARTOUCH.htm
[feature] = feature term
[Feature] = Feature term

html Simplified examples of the html tagging are given with each page description. Note that:-
  • </td> tags are missing (because, at the time, we knew no better).
  • our use of <meta>, to generate overall indexing, is not described.
