pass'd thro' and the Brent, Thames, Ditsford, Test, Avon, Stour,
Piddle and Froom are the Principal Rivers cross'd over: being
for the most part a good and well-beaten Road. Acute Turnings to be avoided. At 49'6 The Right to the Downs. 54'2 The Left to Winchester. 56'6 The Left acute. 57'3 The Right to Barton. 61'7 The Left in Sutton, to Winchester. 69'2 The Left in Stockbridg, to Southampton. 70'5 The Right to Salisbury. 74'2 and 4 The Left to Bossington and Hampton. 78'0 The Left to Rumsey. ... FROM London to Basingstoke; (as in London to the Land's End) whence an indirect and partly Woody Road by Altham-Ch. on the Right, 1/2 M. leads at 58'3 to a Desc. of 4 F. At 60'6 thro' Cramborn-V. and over a Brook ascend 3 F. to Sutton at 61'7 of near 3 F. Thence crossing several Roads that lead from Southampton and Winchester to Andover, &c. at 67'2 pass thro' a Valley, and at 68'2 descend 4 F. 1/4 M. farther, ent'ring Stockbridg a Corp. which sends Burgesses to Parl. affords very good Accommodation to Travellers; and formerly had a Market, now disus'd. At 70 M, an Asc. of 2 F. appears with a like Desc. at 73 M. pass thro' Broughton of 3 F. and 3 F. farther, ascending 2 F. go down again 4 F. At 75'3 a small Desc. leads thro' W-Tytherly-V. and 1 1/2 M. farther thro' E-Dean-V. to Wiltshire. ... Backward Turnings to be avoided. ... XII. At the End of Broughton, the Left to Salisbury. XIII. 2 F. beyond Sutton, the Left to Newbury. |
