HERE GERMAN MINERS OF LEAD AND SILVER WHOSE SMELTING HOUSE WAS AT THE FORGE, PAID THEIR DUES TO THE OFFICERS OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I. AND HERE ALSO MANY UNSCRUPULOUS TRADERS THE PLUMBAGO ORE STOLEN FROM THE MINES IN BORROWDALE.' 'IT WAS HERE THAT THE EARL OF DERWENTWATER CALLED, THE LAST TIME HE WAS IN KESWICK TO QUAFF A TANKARD OF ALE FROM THE SADDLE, AFTER WHICH HE RODE OF TO JOIN IN THE 1715 REBELLION, WHICH ENDED IN HIS DEATH ON THE SCAFFOLD ON TOWER HILL LONDON.'
