The railway was promoted by the Brogden Family. A route was
surveyed by McLean and Stileman, 1850.
19 1/2 miles. The railway caused enormous changes to the northern shore of Morecambe Bay and the Kent Estuary. From the openeing in 1859 up to the 1870s over 1100 acres of land were reclaimed. Above the viaduct 700 acres of new marsh appeared as a result of silting, some of which was reclaimed later. 33 3/4 miles.
An early plan went from Millom Station, across the 1 1/4 mile Duddon estuary by viaduct, to join the Furness railway south of Kirkby. New powers were acquired, 1865, for a line from Millom across the Duddon estuary to a junction with the Furness Railway at Askam, and then straight across to Lindal. This never hapenned; the FR took over in 1865. A contractor had started work on the new viaduct, materials onsite, etc by 1867.
| hearsay |
A five and a quarter mile cut off connecting
Grange-over-Sands to Oxenholme, part of the Furness Railway,
open 1876, finally closed 1972.
The 1867 Act states that part of the line must be on arches:- In order that the view from Dallam Tower Estate may be onstructed as little as possible making a bridge over the River Bela into an unecessary viaduct.

15 1/4 miles including branches.

Initially 14 miles of line serving mines at Lindal and at
Kirkby. William Wordsworth objected to the railway.
The two core routes were: from Crooklands, by Dalton in Furness, Dalton Town with Newton, to Barrow-in-Furness, and to Kirkby Slate Works, near Kirkby in Furness, Kirkby Ireleth, Cumbria. There were early extensions: from Crooklands through Lindal, to Ulverston, Cumbria; and from Kirkby to Broughton in Furness, Broughton West, Cumbria. Other extensions and complicated routes in Barrow brought the track mileage to 428 3/4 miles by 1918. The lines are so complicated that the routes noted in 'Mapping' groups are unreliable; the undated groups are the least reliable. Despite referring to several reliable looking books, which don't entirely agree with each other, I am still confused. The Maping groups include places to locate the line which may not have been 'extant' when the line was first opened; the mappings do not include all the parts of every Y-junction.
