hearsay There were local protests that an important habitat for red squirrels, who are threatenned enough already, was being destroyed by the felling of this wood. The official responses were varied. The Forestry Commission, a telephone response, was 'we don't care'; other responses were on the lines of 'what red squirrels, they're not reported here'. Red squirrels are, or were, frequent visitors to Kilnstones, and they had been reported to supposedly competent authorities. However the reports do not seem to get into the county database about wildlife. The system of reporting this and other species badly needs overall, especially if it is to continue to be used to make planning decisions.
