Sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa; probably planted 400 years ago, before the present hall was built.
This species was introduced to England by the Romans, from SE Europe and Asia. It was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The bark grows in a net pattern with deep fissures that spiral up the trunk.
