from Tebay on the Lancaster and Carisle Railway, through Gaisgill, Ravenstonedale, Smardale, Kirkby Stephen Barras, Westmorland; and eastward over Stainmoor, Durham.
There were several schemes proposed to cross from east to west coast lines. Earlier schemes amalgamated into the Northern Counties Union Railway, approved 1846, failed 1849. The SDLUR inherited the route, choosing Tebay rather than Clifton as the west endpoint.
