Parish church. Rebuilt on site of earlier church 1857 by Miles Thompson of Kendal; vestry on north side added in 1866, rebuilt 1872 when chancel extended by William White of London. Pebble-dashed, with dressed stone details, on chamfered plinth; chamfered eaves band on corbels; stepped buttressing. Graduated slate roofs with terra-cotta ridge tiles; stone copings and kneelers with apex crosses. 4-bay nave with west tower, 3-bay chancel, and adjoining vestry. Plank door with pointed head in gabled north porch; windows have pointed heads. 3-stage west tower has taller octagonal stair turret, with external access, at junction with nave on north side; both embattled. Interior: Aisleless nave with double hammer-beam roof trusses; pointed tower and chancel arches. Hammer-beam roof over altar; painted reredos. Gothick carving to choir pews. Minton tiles throughout. Octagonal wooden pulpit with arcaded, openwork, sides. Stone font has 4 marble shafts supporting circular bowl with evangelist symbols carved on panels at cardinal points. Scrollwork decoration to wrought-iron gates in tower arch. Good C19 glass including 4 panels by Morris & Co.

Memorial to servants at Irton Hall; late C18/early C19. Stone, square in plan c6 ft tall. Moulded plinth surmounted by large, cavetto-sided block inscribed with servants' names in panelled frames to each side; cornice carries splayed block with fluted finial.

hearsay A cross slab was removed from under the altar when an old church was demolished, 1856. It has/had on it an ornamental cross head, the steps of Calvary at the base, a pilgrim's pouch, and a sword.
It is said to have marked the grave of Sir Adam d'Yerton, a crusader Knight of St John, died 1096.

notes In 1552 there were 'ii porch belles'; replaced by two new bells, 1715, commemorating the Battle of Preston; 1887 one cracked bell was broken up and the other, the 'Pretender Bell' was hung in Irton Hall as a clock bell; inscribed:-
[IMPOSTER FUGATUS AN GEORGE II REGIS SECo ANNO DOM 1715]
The new ring of 8 was the gift of Sir Thomas Brocklebank in memory of his wife Ann. The wood bell frame was unsteady, knocking the tower wall during ringing. A steel brace was added to the bell frame by Albert Preston, blacksmith, 1984.
