hearsay During late July and early August 1908 there were minor earth tremors in the area, coming from Whiteside. 14 August 1908, W C Hope was bringing in hay at Cornhow when there was a great groaning rumble, and he saw what looked like a cloud of smoke rising, and rocks came tumbling down from the mountain side.
