| notes |
In 1898 a branch of the National Association for the
Prevention of Consumption and other forms of Tuberculosis
was formed locally. In 1904 the Blencathra Sanatorium was
opened by the Countess of Lonsdale. It boasted:-
perfect drainage, ample shelter, sufficiently isolated and a stunning view. A hydroelectric power scheme was set up 1912, and extended with a reservoir to power a second generator in 1915. Sadly this seems to be defunct at present. By 1945 there were 80 beds available, but TB was declining, and the sanatorium became a long stay home for the elderly. In 1975 the empty hospital was offered to the Lake District National Park Authority, who converted it to a hostel for visitors. In 1994 it was converted to a field studies centre to be run by the Field Studies Council, FSC. The mosaic in front of the main building was made by the children of Threlkeld primary school led by artist Rosalind Wates. | |
