There is a farmstead called Threlkeld Place, which was
formerly haunted in this manner [reappearing skulls cf
Calgarth]. The skull was found there by a new tenant in a
dark room which had been unused by his predecessor. It was
promptly buried, but, on going to the room soon after, it
was found again in the same niche in the wall. The farmer in
his alarm carried it to St. Bees Head and cast it into the
sea only to find that it was at home to receive him on his
return. Other means were employed to get rid of it, but
without effect. ...
