| House, originally built as Whitefield House, now Hotel. 1840 for Joseph Gillbanks, incorporating late C18 house, with alterations and additions dated and inscribed over rear entrance A.G.1911. Incised cement render, with string course, cornice, battlemented parapets and angle pilasters on ashlar plinth, all of red sandstone. Low-pitched roof, hidden by parapet, with stone chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays with flanking bow-fronted wings of 3 bays each and rear extension, forming overall L-shape. C20 glazed and panelled double doors, with flanking side lights, in pilastered surround within projecting 2-storey Doric porch, tetrastyle in antis, with half-fluted columns; Gillbanks coat-of-arms above and tripartite sash window with glazing bars in pilastered surround. Flanking tripartite sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds. Wings have tall sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds. Garden terrace to left forms integral part of house with segmental arches under giving access to cellar door, and steps up to open balustrades partly covered by C20 glazing to rear. Rear wall has round-headed staircase sash window, with radial glazing bars. Extension has sash windows in painted stone surrounds. Interior has moulded plaster ceilings. Geometrical staircase with patterned cast-iron balusters. Panelled doors and internal shutters throughout. Joseph Gillbanks (1780-1853), who originated from Ireby, made his fortune in Jamaica and on his return to England in 1814 bought this house. Sold by the family in 1929. | ||
