Hawkshead parish, once in
The landlord here had a giant clog, described in the
Ambleside Herald, 26 June 1880:-
It is a proper monster. After measuring it we found it to be nearly twenty inches long, over eight inches wide at the bottom, sixteen inches from welt to welt across the front, twenty-two inches round the back from tab to tab, and the length of the heel seven inches. ... We were informed that the wearer of this clog had been dead some years. He used to follow mole catching, and lived to a great age.
