Relief map, plaster of paris etc, Model Map of the
English Lake District, scale 1 inch to 1 mile, made by
Exelby Reynolds, Shipley, Yorkshire, 1940s?
The vertical exageration is 3 times.
The base map is dated 1913. Railways were grouped, forming
the London Midland and Scottish Railway, LMS, in 1923. The
'Midland Region' came into existence as a part of
nationalisation in 1948, Mr Reynolds died 1931, but this map
could have been made by the surviving company.

Obituary

The Shipley Times and Express carried an obituary for Mr
Reynolds, 21 March 1931.
|

DEATH OF MR. EXELBY REYNOLDS.
|
|
|
The death occurred on Tuesday, at the age of 68, of Mr.
Exelby Reynolds, of 1 Temple Rhydding Drive, Baildon, who
was well known throughout the country as a maker of relief
maps.
|
|
|
Mr. Reynolds was at one time a teacher at the Wood End
School, Windhill, but eventually left the teaching
profession to enter business on his own account as a map and
atlas maker. The firm which he established at Windhill
quickly prospered, and ultimately his relief maps attained a
widespread fame for thier accuracy and splendid workmanship.
Examples of his art are to be found in railway stations in
every part of the country, while travellers from the West
Riding have been interested to note his signature on giant
maps in many foreign countries, including India and China.

1898 Post Office Directory, he is listed as a schoolmaster
at Carr Lane.
|
|
|
The Post Office and Kelly~s trade directories for Bradford,
from 1990 onwards list Mr Reynolds - map manufacturer, and
then relief map maker, based at the Old Wesleyan Day School,
Windhill Crag, and then at Atlas works, Briggate, Shipley.
|
|
|
He also lived in Shipley: Carr Lane from 1900-1912; and
Selbourne Terrace in 1917, 1927; presumably moving to Temple
Rhydding Drive in the 1930s.
